Dark Souls 3 Covenants (Complete Guide) 2021

Dark Souls 3 Covenants

The multiplayer component in the Dark Souls franchise has always been something fun to do on the side, but not fleshed out. It wasn’t until Dark Souls 3 that the developers decided to take the game’s multiplayer component to the next level and introduced a new feature called Covenants.

The Covenants in Dark Souls 3 can be compared to allying with factions in online video games, and it comes with clan perks such as special items, abilities, or mechanics.

These things affect both the single-player and online experience – so it’s a very important feature for anyone who is not strictly an offline player.

Naturally, not every Covenant is meant for everyone as they all come with different lore, rewards, and playstyles – and that can take a lot of time to figure out on your own since the game has 9 different Covenants that the player can ally themselves with.

What Are Dark Souls 3 Covenants?

Covenants in Dark Souls 3 are factions that you can ally within the game, and it’s mainly an online feature but it also affects single-player gameplay. Every faction is meant for a different type of playstyle and players are rewarded with special items, mechanics, and abilities for joining each of the 9 Covenants.

What the rewards grant you differ in terms of values in relation to what mode you’re playing. For example, if it’s co-op gameplay, then the effects will differ by a bit.

All Dark Souls 3 Covenants and their Rewards

To join a Covenant, you simply have to equip their insignia that can be found throughout Lothric – and then you will be an ally to that Covenant for as long as you like. Now that we have what a Covenant in Dark Souls 3 is, let’s talk about the Covenants themselves and what they offer to the player!

1. Rosaria’s Fingers

If you’re looking for a Covenant that is the best in terms of PvP combat, then Rosaria’s Fingers is the one that you need to ally yourself with. It allows the player to be hostile when invading other worlds and your job is to hunt down the Host of Embers.

Each dying blue spirit will reward the player for that and it’s one of the easier Covenant to level up in too. Additionally, it also allows the player to change their appearances multiple times – which is a bit random but certainly a welcome reward.

How to Join Rosaria’s Fingers:

If you go to the Cathedral of the Deep which is by the bonfire in Rosaria’s Bed Chamber, you simply need to talk to Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth and she’ll let you join this Covenant.

Rosaria’s Fingers Rewards:

  • Ability to summon Yellowfinger Heysel at Keep Ruins bonfire.
  • Proper Bow gesture.
  • Pale Tongue (by defeating the Host of Embers).
  • Change appearance fives times in a single playthrough.
  • Forked Pale Tongue (defeat the Blue Spirits that are protecting the Host of Embers).
  • Man-grub’s Staff.
  • Obscuring Ring.

2. Mound-Maker

The Mound-Maker is considered one of the best Covenants in Dark Souls 3 because unlike some of the others, it’s not built around a single purpose such as PvP, co-op, or single-player gameplay.

Instead, it covers all three of them and has something to offer. When you invade worlds, you can attack hosts, phantoms of both kinds, and then kill the Host of Embers too.

Its list of rewards isn’t that high, but everything that it offers otherwise makes up for it.

How to Join Mound-Maker

It’s difficult to join Mound-Maker, so it’s not recommended for players who aren’t hardcore. The first thing to note is that if you defeat the Curse-rotted Greatwood, you won’t be able to join it until you defeat any two of the four Lords of Cinder – which takes a lot of time and effort.

So, if you want to join the Mound-Maker Covenant, try to do it before you slay the Curse-rotted Greatwood.

And make sure to not kill both the Curse-rotted Greatwood and Sirris of the Sunless – because if the former is dead, you can follow the quests of the latter to defeat Hodrick and loot the emblem from his corpse. So, if both are dead, the Mound-Maker Covenant has been locked away forever.

To start off, go to the Undead Settlement and enter the hidden area that is filled with Thralls and a Hollow Manservant that can be seen holding onto a cage.

If you talk to this NPC, the player will be able to sit inside the cage and will be taken to the Pit of Hollows, inside which the player can speak to the Holy Knight Hodrick that is next to the Sacrificial Altar meant for this Covenant.

The player will be given an emblem and a Homeward Bone, and then the steps will be complete.

Mound-Maker Rewards

  • Bloodlust – Rank 1 offers 10 Vertebrae, increases with leveling up.
  • Warmth – Rank 2 offers 30 Vertebrae, increases with leveling up.
  • Vertebra Shackle – Defeating the Host of Embers and killing any phantoms.

3. Way of Blue

way of blue dark souls 3 convenant

The Way of Blue Covenant is very interesting as it is tied to two of the other Covenants in Dark Souls 3, which are the Blade of the Darkmoon and Blue Sentinel ones. Way of Blue allies focuses on co-operative gameplay rather than PvP, although fighting other players will happen nonetheless.

Whenever Way of Blue members are invaded, they will be able to call in the support of the Blade of the Darkmoon and Blue Sentinel Covenant members, so the fight will be split evenly between everyone and the world of the player will be defended.

There is an exception though, as the support cannot be called in when the player is being invaded by the Watchdogs of Farron or Aldrich Faithful members – as it is a part of their rewards to be safe from it.

Ultimately, Way of Blue is more of a pacifist Covenant than anything else and does not offer much aside from the defensive support of other Covenants.

How to Join Way of Blue

Joining this Covenant requires the way to equip the ‘Way of Blue’ item and then visit Emma, the High Priestess of Lothric Castle. She can be found in the cathedral on the opposite side of Vordt of the Boreal – who also happens to be the only source of the aforementioned item.

You can either just join by talking to Emma or killing her and looting the insignia from her corpse.

Way of Blue Rewards

  • Receive the support of the Blade of the Darkmoon Covenant when being invaded.
  • Receive the support of the Blue Sentinel Covenant when being attacked.

4. Blue Sentinels

Dark Souls 3 Covenants Blue sentinels

Blue Sentinels have one main purpose – and that is to protect the Way of Blue Covenant allies whenever they are being invaded by another Covenant. Their job varies between two tasks, which are to either escort the Way of Blue members as they visit a boss – or kill the invader who is trying to attack the world.

The rewards for this aren’t the most exciting, but if you want to feel like a bodyguard who only fights rogue PvP players – then this Covenant is for you.

How to Join Blue Sentinels

You can join the Blue Sentinels by either talking to Horace the Hushed or killing him, which would then give you the insignia for the Covenant that can be equipped for joining. You can find him at the Halfway Fortress bonfire that is on the Road of Sacrifices – right before defeating the Deacons of the Deep.

However, if you have already defeated the Deacons of the Deep, you will be able to find him at the Firelink Shrine instead.

Blue Sentinel Rewards

  • Darkmoon Ring – Rank 1 offers 10 Concords, which increases as you level up.
  • Darkmoon Blade – Rank 2 offers 30 Concords, which increases as you rank up.
  • Proof of a Concord Kept (the main gimmick of being a bodyguard).

5. Blades of the Darkmoon

Dark Souls 3 Covenants Blades Of Dark Moon

Similar to Blue Sentinels, the Blades of the Darkmoon has the main purpose of being summoned to the worlds of Way of Blue Covenant allies whenever they are being invaded by other Covenant or players in general.

Both the purpose and the rewards are the same as that of a Blue Sentinels, but the difference with this Covenant is that it’s a reference to the original Dark Souls games – so fans of the entire trilogy rather than just the third game would find a reason to pick this one over Blue Sentinels.

How to Join Blades of the Darkmoon

You need to get the Darkmoon Loyalty gesture from Sirris of the Sunless Realms as the first thing for the process of joining this Covenant. She can be found at the Firelink Shrine, and of course, the player needs to make sure they don’t kill her as that would lock the Covenant forever.

Once you have the Darkmoon Loyalty gesture, the player needs to go to the Prison Tower in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, and inside, Company Captain Yorshka will give you the insignia that you need to join the Covenant.

Blades of the Darkmoon Rewards

  • Darkmoon Ring – Rank 1 offers 10 Concords, increases with leveling up.
  • Darkmoon Blade – Rank 2 offers 30 Concords, increases with leveling up
  • Proof of a Concord Kept – Allows you to defeat the invaders when summoned and escort the Way of Blue host.

6. Aldrich Faithful

This Covenant, as the name implies, gives the players the task of protecting Aldrich’s territory from any trespassers who visit it.

To refresh your memory, this part of the game’s world is the courtyard outside of Pontiff Sylyvahn’s arena that leads to the stairway which is used to reach Anor Londo. The player will get summoned to the world of the trespasser and have to kill them to complete their duty.

As you must have understood already, this is quite the PvP-centric Covenant and you’d need to be at a good level to be able to handle the heat. One interesting thing to note though is that the rewards are particularly useful for Faith-based builds in Dark Souls 3 – so if you’re one of those players, this will greatly benefit you.

How to Join Aldrich Faithful

You need to travel to the lower area of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley and you will need to cross to the other side of the courtyard from Pontiff Sulyvahn’s bonfire.

When you get inside the building where dead Giant Slaves are, you will find a false wall that leads to a ladder, and that drops you in a flooded area where you’ll see two Sylyvahn’s Beasts.

In order to get the Aldrich Faithful Insignia, you need to defeat the two creatures and then you’ll find Archdeacon McDonnell’s corpse where you can then ask to join the Covenant.

Aldrich Faithful Rewards

  • Great Deep Soul – Rank 1 offers 10 Dregs, increases with leveling up.
  • Archdeacon’s Great Staff – Rank 2 offers 30 Dregs, increases with leveling up.
  • Human Dregs (received by defeating a Host of Embers invader).

7. Watchdogs of Farron

Watchdogs of Farron are assigned to defend the Crucifixion Woods from any possible trespassers. The players carrying this Covenant will be summoned to the world of the player that comes close to the swamp near the Halfway Fortress.

Sometimes the player will have to fight a single trespasser, and sometimes it will be multiple players – so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for a good fight.

How to Join Watchdogs of Farron

The swamp next to Farron’s Keep has a ladder that is guarded by Rotten slugs.

Once you defeat them and climb the ladder, you will see a wolf next to a bonfire. Speak to this wolf and you will be given the insignia that will make you an ally.

Watchdogs of Farron Rewards

  • Old Wolf Curved Sword – Rank 1 offers 10 Swordgrass.
  • Wolf Ring – Rank 2 offers 30 Swordgrass.
  • Wolf Knight’s Greatshield – Rank 2 offers 30 Swordgrass.
  • Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass (by defeating an Embered trespasser).

8. Spears of the Church

Spears of the Church is a very interesting Covenant, as it allows the player to act as a boss for other players who come for the Halflight, Spear of the Church boss fight. Just like any good boss, the player gets increased statistics such as health, damage resistance, and more.

And the player also gets unique abilities, such as the Ritual Spear Fragment and Divine Spear Fragment.

How to Join Spears of the Church

The player needs to defeat the Darkeater Midir who can be found on the bridge to the Church of Filianore. Once he’s defeated, he will fall into a chasm below and you can reach him by using the secret path to the second shortcut in the Ringed Inner Wall.

Then defeating him once more will give you the insignia that you need.

Spears of the Church Rewards

  • Divine Spear Fragment – Rank 2 offers 30 Spear Ornaments.
  • Young Grass Dew – Rank 1 offers 10 Spear Ornaments.
  • Being a boss fight for other players (includes the ability to use Ritual Spear Fragment and Divine Spear Fragment).
  • Filianore’s Spear Ornament (gained by defeating other players).

9. Warrior of Sunlight

Dark Souls 3 Covenants warriors of sunlight

The Warrior of Sunlight Covenant is another one of those that are meant for co-op above other things. You will have to attack areas to take them over, guard hosts who have invasions coming in, and help other players defeat powerful bosses.

The warrior of Sunlight allies is summoned by summoning signs, which is similar to how the normal co-op in the game works.

The rewards are pretty useful, but as to be expected, they are catered towards co-op play.

How to Join Warrior of Sunlight

Go to the Undead Settlement and find the large area that has Peasants and an Evangelist. There is a house to the far left of that area and it has a hole hidden by boxes and spiders. Accessing the hole will show you a table that has the Warrior of Sunlight insignia.

Warrior of Sunlight Rewards

  • Sacred Oath – Rank 1 offers 10 Medals.
  • Great Lightning Spear – Rank 2 offers 30 Medals.
  • Ember (by helping a Host of Embers defeat a boss).
  • Sunlight Medal (by helping a Host of Embers defeat a boss or defeating the Host of Embers by being an invader).
