World of Tanks is a game that has been around for over a decade and is available on almost every previous and current generation platform.
If you haven’t played the game for a while, it’s natural to wonder if the game is still worth playing so many years after release – as it’s no less than a major achievement to have a game survive for so long.
With so many new online games coming out every year, is World of Tanks still going to be worth playing in 2021? Let’s find out.
World of Tanks is a solid free-to-play shooter that has unique gameplay with a lot of content and several expansions to enhance your playing experience, so there’s no need to question the game’s quality.
However, to keep a game relevant and alive, an important aspect is to constantly release new content and keep things fresh for the player-base.
That’s why we’re going to look at the major recent updates World of Tanks has received this year and plan to add later on, so here’s what you can expect from the game going forward:
The World of Tanks development team has been known for taking player feedback seriously, and Ranked Battles have returned to the game for 2021 with tons of gameplay and balancing changes – include the Bonus Battles which players can earn.

Gameplay and Vehicular Rebalancing
There have been many recent changes in the balancing of the game, which has the purpose of making it a fun experience for both existing players and potential new ones.
There’s a large number of changes that have been made and are in progress and they are being deployed in big updates every now and then.
They’re too many to list down, but they deal with things such as how useful certain equipment is, many different tanks being balanced to have a better overall match-up with, and even effects such as how long the stun of a certain attack lasts.
Improved Crew and Equipment Systems
The Crew system has been one of the most talked-about and changed mechanics in World of Tanks, as the community is often divided upon them.
As a result, the developers enrolled a new variation to the system that added many different aspects such as ‘the Unit’, ‘Special Crews’, a reworked perk system, and an exclusive Sandbox server where players can test out new ideas and implementations without affecting the main game and thus providing the developers their feedback.
The key point is to finalize a system that would be fairly balanced and not provide an unfair advantage to any side.
The equipment system on the other hand has been expanded upon and the goal the developers had in mind was to both add new types of Equipment but also simplify the mechanic for players so that it is something that the player-base finds themselves more interested in.
The most important addiction was the Equipment slots, which are specific to each role and vehicle and carry different types of bonuses and advantages for the player and their tanks while not breaking balance in any way.
Better Security and Management
The game was a victim of several DDoS attacks and some of the events had to be scheduled as they might have overlapped with each other otherwise.
The developers saw it as a major setback and greatly increased their security while promising the players that it won’t happen again. So, anyone frustrated with the server inconsistencies will be happy to know that things will be smoother going onwards.
They have also fixed a previously annoying glitch that caused invisible walls to block shots and also made certain objects ‘slippery’ to traverse on. These issues were addressed and eventually fixed once the team made an effort to fix the issue.
Believe it or not, World of Tanks is still very actively updated with new events as if it was still a new game. There are all kinds of events that come out within updates for the game every now and then, which includes:
- Events that have no specific reason besides providing new and exciting content to the players
- Events that are based on seasons and important holidays such as Christmas and Halloween
- Events that are based on anniversaries and milestones for the game, like 2010’s recent 10th Anniversary event that added a lot of bonuses for the players and celebrated World of Tank’s success in style
So, even in 2021 you can expect new events regularly being added to the game.
So, with all things considered – is World of Tanks still worth playing in 2021? The answer is a big yes!
The game is still one of the most active MMOs that you can get into this year and also one of the most welcoming ones.
The player-base is still very alive, the game is available on many different platforms and features cross-play through several of them, actively gets updated with new balance patches and an endless stream of content, and has many events every single year that are not going to be stopped anytime soon.
Don’t spend any more time thinking and jump into some of that unique tank shooting PvP action.
