Ark Survival Evolved: How to Make A Ship Base

Ark Survival Evolved: How to Make a Ship Base

Ark: Survival Evolved is all about surviving in harsh environments, taming dinosaurs, and crafting anything that you can imagine. Since the game has large bodies of water, it’s only natural that players want to make and use ships to travel around and live the life of a pirate.

Ark: Survival Evolved does not have pre-made ships that you can find and sail around the seas in.

And to make things even more complicated, you can’t directly make a ship and instead have to follow a few steps by obtaining other items first which are then upgraded to that point.

So, let’s go over the steps that you need to follow to make a ship in Ark: Survival Evolved, starting with the ship base.

How to make a ship base in Ark Survival Evolved

The very first thing that you need to do in order to make a ship is to obtain the base that is used to make one. Here’s what you need, in order:

1. Craft A Wooden Raft

The very first thing you need to have is the Wooden Raft, as it serves as the primary basis of what you need to create a ship on. You can make one as soon as you hit level 16 and can buy the skill that is required for it for 11 Engram Points.

You can also upgrade the Wooden Raft to a Motorboat if you want since it has better stats and allows for an easier process of having more durable structures – but this is entirely optional and based on your preferences.

If you do intend to do that, you need to be level 57, the skill costs 45 Engram Points, and you’d need a Wooden Raft, an Electrical Generator, and a Metal Foundation.

2. Gather the materials

Making a ship is all about what you want to make and there is no fixed method to do it. There are small ships, large ships, and the structure and what’s used to make them can differ from each other a lot. So, we’ll go with a simple ship that we know always works, and here’s the material required:

  • Wooden Ladder (3x)
  • Wooden Ceiling (10x)
  • Sloped Wood Wall Right (1x)
  • Wooden Hatchframe (1x)
  • Sloped Wood Wall Left (1x)
  • Wooden Catwalks (4x)
  • Wooden Railings (16x)
  • Wooden Door Frame (1x)
  • Wooden Window Frame (2x)
  • Triangle Foundations (3x)
  • Wooden Fence Foundations (3x)
  • Wooden Pillars (5x)
  • Wooden Walls (15x)
  • Flags (8x)
  • Wooden Ramps (2x)

This makes up a total of 83 items, which leaves room for 5 more slots that can include a bed and whatnot, as the limit of a Wooden Raft is 88 structures.

Now that you have the ship’s base covered, it’s time to make the ship itself. It’s not that complicated to make the ship and if you have been playing the game for some time, you’ll know how to set the foundations based on the items that you collected.

For example, the pillars are used as a way to hold the roof, the ramps act as support, and so on.

This can be done on the base game with ease and requires no mods, which is great for newcomers and old players alike.

One helpful tip is to make triangular blocks out of the ramps since they serve as a better foundation for the ship shape. It can be a bit confusing, but all you need to do is to lay down the triangle foundations to shape the front side of your boats and the backend.

Simply lay the thatch ceiling down instead of the wooden one – and that will do the job.

Once the ship is built and ready to go, all that you need to do is to take it for a spin and since this is an early level build, most sea creatures will not attack you. And if you put a bed inside, it can act as a temporary hideout for you too.

Last but not least, you can paint it up and make it look better too, just because it’s small doesn’t mean it has to look bad.
