While the world of creative sandbox gaming is dominated by Minecraft, the procedurally generated 2D world of Terraria took the world by a storm in its own right.

The game features a sandbox with endless possibilities like fishing and is heavily customizable just like other games in the genre – but with a unique personality of its own that earned it a player base of its own.

When a game features endless exploration, crafting, combat, and customization, you know that it needs a multiplayer component too. Terraria is no exception as it comes with full-fledged multiplayer capabilities that make the game incredibly fun to play regardless of what platform you’re not.

Naturally, when a game is this fun and successful – players want to know if the game features cross-platform multiplayer or not. After all, no one wants to buy specific hardware just to be able to play a game with their friends online in 2021, they should be able to play the game with anyone that they want as long as they have the same version of the game.

So, does Terraria have cross-platform multiplayer? Let’s find out!

Terraria Cross-Play Explained

For those who know what cross functions in video games are, you can skip to the next section for the answer that you’re here for. For those who are unfamiliar with the three types of cross functions in video games, let’s go over a brief explanation for a moment.

There are three types of cross functionalities in video games so far, and they all have different uses. The first one is called cross-play and it refers to the ability to play the game with your friends regardless of what platform that you’re all on.

For example, someone on a PC should be able to play the game with a PlayStation 5 without any extra effort required as long as they have the same version of the game.

The second one is called cross-progression, which means that you have shared progress across all the devices that you can play the game on. For example, if you play Terraria on an iPhone and reach a certain level, you should be able to continue off of that level on a PC without having to start the game over.

Lastly, cross-generation functionality refers to the ability to play the same game across two different consoles under the same brand – but not with other companies.

For example, you should be able to play a PlayStation 4 game online with a PlayStation 5 player without having to migrate to that console, but you can’t play with someone on an Xbox. The same applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Now that we have these explanations out of the way, let’s answer the million-dollar question everyone is here for!

Is Terraria Cross-Play?

Terraria is available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, macOS, Google Stadia, Linux, PlayStation Vita. Additionally, you can play it on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S thanks to legacy backward compatibility.

Terraria unfortunately does not have cross-play capabilities. The game features cross-play on mobiles as you can play multiplayer between the iOS and Android platforms. However, the computer versions and the console versions of the game do not feature cross-play at all – so you’re stuck on playing with people who have the same platform as you.

The game does not have cross-progression either, and only using certain tools created by fans can allow you to transfer progress in some cases but it’s not something that works on every platform or something that everyone can set up.

The game does have cross-generation multiplayer, as players on PlayStation 4 can play online with those who are on a PlayStation 5. The same goes for the Xbox One, as it can play online with the Xbox Series S and X.

There are no concrete plans of adding cross-platform to the game at the moment, especially since it’s not a game as big as Fortnite that could pay the proper fees and establish the infrastructure. However, fans still hold onto the hope that cross-play will one day be added to Terraria, whether it’s in this game or a potential sequel in the future.

Is Terraria Cross-Platform Between PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android?

Terraria is not cross-play between PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or iOS/Android. All of these platforms are limited to each other in terms of multiplayer – which means that you can’t play with anyone that isn’t on the same device as you. The mobile port, in general, has cross-play with each other, which are the iOS and Android.

Is Terraria Available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?

Terraria can be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X & S thanks to backward compatibility. An official port hasn’t been released so far, but the game works perfectly nonetheless.
